Supporting your students’ academic development – what IAD can offer

We work with Schools and Programmes to develop sessions and resources for students. How to contact the IAD’s Taught Student Development Team.

The Taught Student Development Team is part of the wider Learning and Teaching Team at the Institute for Academic Development. We help students to succeed with their studies and to make the most of their time at University.

We are currently a small team of 5 staff (4 FTE), providing support for the University’s 43,000 taught students. We offer a core programme of general academic support and also work with colleagues based in Schools to develop subject specific support.

Working with Schools

We receive positive feedback from students about our core support. However, students tell us that they would also like to receive support for their learning and academic development from their School, in the context of their subject/ discipline and ideally as part of the core curriculum. This is backed up by research, and is particularly true for students from widening participation backgrounds (Howieson & Minty, 2019)

We work with colleagues in Schools to provide advice and assistance to develop sessions and/or resources to support students’ learning and development. The most effective sessions are integrated or embedded in the core curriculum. Programmes take ownership of any sessions or resources developed and take responsibility for maintaining and adapting resources.

Our resources in Study Hub and Exam Bootcamp are freely available (CC Licence BY-NC-4.0) to be used by staff directly, or adapted for their teaching.
