You can find introductory training on sustainability here.

Lasting around an hour to an hour and a half, the course below will look at:

  • what sustainability means at the University of Edinburgh

  • four major areas in which the University is working on sustainability, namely operations, learning and teaching, research and partnerships
  • finally, actions you can take to live, work and study more sustainably.

Online training course - introduction to sustainability

This earlier guide (below), Be Sustainable, developed in 2015 in partnership between the Institute for Academic Development and the Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability, covers topics including:

  • computers
  • energy
  • laboratories
  • procurement
  • research

Though a number of links and initiatives will be out of date now, there is still some useful general advice that may still be relevant.

You can download it in full as a PDF:

Sustainable Research Practice

On the UoE Research Staff Hub, you can find out about the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice. There is also links to a new UoE SharePoint site and a training course, to offer guidance for researchers on meeting the requirements of the Concordat and support for producing competitive funding applications. This includes guiding questions to answer on a project’s environmental sustainability and boilerplate text on The University’s goals, targets and strategies.
