Although the 3MT is aimed at an intelligent lay audience, begin by simplifying your research to a level where you are explaining it to your 10 year old. This really helps you to think about the very basics of your research How has 3MT benefited you? By participating in the 3MT, I have definitely become more confident in my ability to present to various audiences in an engaging way. It has also led to me developing a reputation within our institute as being someone who is able to communicate their research well. As such I was invited to give a speech as a guest of honour for Race For Life and selected to present a poster at an inaugural opening of our institute. What was the most challenging thing about 3MT? The most challenging thing for me was actually remembering what to say when under pressure. Why would you recommend 3MT to other doctoral students? I would recommend 3MT even just to help you think about your research with a broader perspective and think about how your work can contribute to the society in general, which you don’t usually do on a day-to-day level. How have you used the skills gained in the competition? Being a finalist meant that we were given the opportunity to have a vocal training session through the IAD.
