A 5-minute video to explain how the Institute for Academic Development (IAD) can support University of Edinburgh undergraduates with their studies

This short video provides information about how you can access support for your studies from the Taught students Development team at the Institute for Academic Development, the IAD. We are here to help you succeed by helping you to learn and study effectively. We offer a programme of general academic support. This support is provided in three main ways. Online resources, study development workshops, and one to one study skills consultations. The next few slides provide a bit more detail about each of these. The key resource to remember is Study Hub, our online learning resources, blog and X or Twitter account. This is what our Study Hub learning resources page looks like. Each topic has an open access web page and some general advice and options to go further. The topics covered by our Study Hub learning resources include making notes in class, time management, effective studying, academic writing, critical thinking, good academic practice, presentations and posters, group working, dissertations and research projects, proof reading and editing and exams. The Study Hub pages include resources and templates that you can download or print off. Some examples are shown here. We offer a presentation planner and a reading notes sheet to help you read critically and to structure your notes effectively. This is our Study Hub blog. The blog is regularly updated with new content, which includes study skills tips, articles on student life, insights from staff and students, plus updates on events and opportunities. To keep up to date with the blog and for announcements about forthcoming workshops, you can follow IAD Study Hub on X @IAD_Study Hub. A further online resource that you can access is Exam boot camp. This is a set of online resources available as a short course on Learn in your essentials tab. You can work through the resources at your own pace. Exam Boot camp offers targeted practical advice that aims to help you prepare for your exams by using effective evidence based approaches. It covers principles, preparation, how to revise effectively, and how to get through your exams on the day. Exam Bootcamp includes strategies for both on campus and online exams. We offer free study development workshops on a range of topics. We run all of our workshops for undergraduate students on campus and online, so you can choose which format you prefer to attend. Our workshops are open, friendly, and informal and will include some practical activities. They provide a good opportunity to meet students studying different programmes. Workshop topics include making notes from lectures, getting to grips with essay writing, how to read and write critically, and time management. Workshops for undergraduates are held on Wednesday afternoons and on Tuesdays early evening. You can visit our web pages for more information and to see the full schedule. The workshops are booked online through MyEd and will open for booking three weeks in advance of each workshop. For one to one support, you can book a half hour study skills consultation with one of our friendly study development advisors. We can help you develop effective study strategies and enhance your approach to academic work. We can't discuss the specifics of your subject, but we can discuss general issues like managing your reading, effective note making, academic writing, and planning and prioritising your time. We can help you to make the most of feedback, but we can't discuss or edit particular pieces of your work. When you book an appointment, you'll be asked for one or two specific study skills issues that you wish to discuss. Our study skills consultations take place online using Microsoft teams. You're also very welcome to come and see us in person if you prefer. When it comes to specific guidance for your subject, remember to check the information and advice from your school or programme. You'll also receive support for your studies from your lecturers, your tutors, and your academic cohort lead. Good luck and remember that we're here to help you. If you can't find what you're looking for on our web pages, you can send an email to IAD.students@ed.ac.uk  Thank you.
