Abstract

In the Vet School's Digital Education Unit we assist with the design, support and maintenance of a large portfolio of online postgraduate courses. To make these courses effective and easy for students to use, we need to make a series of design choices:

  • what we include, highlight or leave out on any given VLE page
  • how we structure, name, and order VLE content
  • what technical demands we place on online students and technology they have available
  • how we help online students to overcome technical challenges they might face while studying with us
  • how we help online students feel a part of the University of Edinburgh community

There is currently a lack of evidence available to help us make these choices. There is a gap between what we need to know about our online students, and what we actually know. This project aims to close that gap.
