Social responsibility and sustainability

The Institute for Academic Development is committed to social responsibility and sustainability.

In 2019, the IAD is taking forward a new project in order to retain the Gold Sustainability Award we have held since 2016. Our project for this year focuses on mental wellbeing and sustainability. We are taking forward a range of actions which we hope will contribute to mental wellbeing and sustainability at the same time. These include growing, a pedometer challenge, sustainable crafting and fundraising for charities.

Our first Gold Sustainability Award Campaign focused on using technology to enhance sustainability. We were particularly successful on paper reduction, we often now use 10,000 fewer sheets of paper per month by doing things electronically instead! Feel free to take ideas from our paper reduction policy, below. We also focused on using Skype and other online communication to reduce travel. The Gold Award campaign provided constructive opportunities for discussion and collaboration across the IAD, and resulted in changes that have been positive going forward.

In 2018 we retained our Gold award by repeating the Silver and Bronze criteria. We also had some excellent wellbeing and charitable initiatives. These included a pedometer challenge, the Race for Life and food bank collections among others.
